Part 6: Kokh the Rooster

Kokh the Rooster used to enjoy walking along the edge of a small pond by the trail. The water in the pond was very clear and Kokh would always make a point of not glancing at the reflection of himself in it. He was quite sure that this effort of his was a sign of his wisdom. Every now and then, a few people walking along the trail would stop by the pond to relax and it was at these times that Kokh would perform for himself the selfless task of providing very important information about Mount Muri.
“In my former life, it was suggested that I was a newscaster.” Kokh crowed in his nasally voice
The people relaxing by the pond would throw their hands in the air and cheer, “Yay! That’s great!. We love hearing the news.”
“I’m very good, you see, at summarising the news.” Kokh glanced at his reflection in the pond, before turning back to his audience. “And as you know, I’m well placed, I think, in being able to provide such news. In fact,” glancing again at the pond, “I’m quite sure that, now that I think about it, it is like a balloon that continues to…” Kokh opened up his wings, “…expaaaand.”
“Oooh!” the people by the pond gasped, “Did you hear that? He said it was like a balloon that continues to…” everyone extended their arms out, “…expaaand.”
“Yes, yes, balloons do continue to expand,” one replied.
“Oh, this is great!”” said another.
Kokh, glanced again at the pond’s surface. He fluffed up his tail-feathers, snorted to try and clean out his nose and then turned back to his audience.
“Coming up with the…appropriate…descriptions that best describe the news is difficult and do try my best because…” he paused, “…as you all know, the news is like a corkscrew that continues to…” Kokh’s nostrils flared, “…unwiiiind.”
“Yay!” the audience cheered, “Wow! Corkscrews really do unwind!” As one, the audience cried out, “Your descriptions are great!” One member of the audience was so excited, he got up from his seat and presented Kokh with a t-shirt. Kokh unfurled the fold t-shirt and saw that his face was printed on it. He smiled and thanked the audience member for the kind gift.

Kokh stood for a moment, proud of the fact that everyone said the same thing to him at the same time. He also knew that because people listened to him, that he must be wise. This thought made him feel giddy with maturity. He wasn’t sure how he could continue being so selfless but he knew he had a responsibility to his audience to be so. Glancing once more into the pond, Kokh put on the t-shirt, snorted one more time and turned back to his audience.
